Skills over keywords.

For decades, the résumé was a credential check: the right degree, the right companies, the right titles, in the right order. That era is fading. More and more employers are hiring for demonstrated skills — what you can actually do — rather than the pedigree that's supposed to imply it.

Why the shift is happening

Talent is scarce, roles change fast, and the old proxies keep failing — plenty of people with the "right" résumé can't do the job, and plenty without it can. Meanwhile, it's now possible to assess skills directly and at scale. So the smart money is moving from "where did you work?" to "what can you do?"

What skills-first means for you

  • A non-linear path becomes an asset, not a liability — range is valuable.
  • What you can do matters more than where you happened to do it.
  • Transferable skills count: the abilities you built in one context carry into another.
  • Proof beats claims — a demonstrated skill outweighs an asserted one.

How to present your skills

  • Lead with capabilities, not just chronology.
  • Pair every skill with a piece of evidence — a result, an outcome, a thing you shipped.
  • Name the tools and methods specifically; a vague "proficient in many tools" reads as noise.
  • Show range deliberately — the breadth is often the point.
Show, don't list

A skills section is a claim. A short conversation where you explain how you used a skill — and what happened — is proof. That's why a conversation-first profile travels further than a keyword list ever could.
